Lessons / Training

All students start training on the lunge line, working to develop balance, coordination, and suppleness of the muscles and joints. This is done through various exercises and techniques at the walk, trot, and canter. Once the rider had found his or her "perfect seat", the leg, seat, and hand aids are introduced to communicate to the horse. Once a language is created between horse and rider, more technical riding is introduced. Students learn to keep their horses calm, forward and straight to maintain true impulsion in their horse’s way of going.

Hunter / Jumper:
Students start over small jumps, learning how to balance over their horse’s center of gravity. As the student progresses and is able to stay with the horse’s motion and is able to maintain the horse in a quite and controllable state, more jumps and technical exercises are added to the lesson. Students will learn to safely ride a Hunter jump course with finesse before advancing to Show Jumpers.

Training Ride
Horses are worked 35-50 minutes, varying by horse’s level of fitness. Each horse is trained as an individual, and will be working towards different exercises at different times, depending on the horse’s over all goals. Training rides include grooming the horse before and after each workout and bathing if necessary.

On the Ground and In Hand Training

Horses are worked 35-50 minutes, varying on the horse’s mental and physical level of fitness. Horses are taught ground manners, “join up” in the round pen, as well as relaxation and stretching exercises. While In Hand horses begin learning lower level dressage movements/ isolating movements in different parts of the body, and overall balance. This is a great training option to begin working horses that may possess mental and emotional issues.

Young Horse Training
Young horses start their training with desensitization of various objects (such as tarps, plastic bags, lunge whips and tack) and activities (such as touch, grooming, and picking up all four feet). Young horses are taught to halter, lead, lunge, and "join up". Work is done primarily in hand and in the round pen. Horses ages 3 and older can begin their introduction and acceptance of tack and of the rider. Training will then include an introduction and acceptance of the riders aids (leg, seat, and hand).

Equestrian Manager/Trainer
Kelly Upton

Kelly began to ride at age 4 and starting showing in the Hunter Ring at age 8. Kelly has been around horses her whole life.

After attending college at Blinn Junior College, she moved immediately to Baton Rouge, LA where she worked for a renowned breeder of Saddlebreds and Arabians of national standards and shows. During her time in Louisiana, she started working as a Hunter/Jumper trainer, which led to her starting and coaching the LSU equestrian team endeavor. At this time, she was offered an opportunity to run a large equestrian facility here in Texas. She has worked with some local Austin barns such as Kings Bridge and Cornerstone. She has also had the chance to judge some of the Texas shows as well.

Kelly has managed horse and rider teams on a national level in Hunter/Jumpers/Equitation. She has also had the opportunity to work with many renowned trainers here in Texas and is very experienced in our local horse show community. Her talent and love of training is evident in her passion for the sport.  Kelly joined the Reserve team in 2012 and has added great value to the services at the Equestrian Center.
